A jewel of the 18th century. The most ancient records available about this property date from 1569, when it was granted to Don Francisco Merodio de Velasco. After passing through various owners, Doña Francisca and Don Juan González ceded the property to the holy order of the barefoot Carmelita nuns in 1728 in exchange for a monthly annuity.
At this point the Hacienda of Santa María de Miraflores changed its name to El Carmen de Miraflores. The hacienda was exceedingly productive, to the extent that the Carmelita nuns were able to found the convent and church of El Carmen in Guadalajara.
In 1837 the priests sold the property, which again passed from hand to hand until 1961, the year when it was sold to Doña Marta Serrano Zermeño and her husband Doctor Joaquín Baeza del Monte. They restored the main house in order to convert it in 2001 into a luxurious hotel and spa.
Hacienda El Carmen is an unforgettable experience. It evokes the magical nostalgia of the México that once existed and with which we are unacquainted. It is arriving home and being welcomed with a delicious aqua fresca de horchata (a typical cool drink made from rice), then relaxing in an equipal chair while listening to festive Mariachi music in the background. It is imagining what took place in centuries past and falling in love with Mexican customs, traditions and cuisine.
La Hacienda El Carmen, offers 26 bedrooms, each decorated in the most refined taste of old Mexico. The cotton bedspreads are hand embroidered.
The décor is the result of collections from different epochs, styles and places of origin. It includes the use of fine and rustic woods, some of them with inlays and distinctive ironwork. Anonymous colonial paintings grace the walls, and there are sculptures in cantera stone from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Hacienda El Carmen also offers a pool, Jacuzzi, spa and jogging track.
